States of Consciousness

In this article, I’m going to talk about states of consciousness, what they are, and why they are important to understand when it comes to manifesting. Neville Goddard talks about the concept of states frequently in his lectures and his writings and I want to break down what he meant when he referred to them.

What is a state?
A state is essentially an attitude of mind, a state of experience, and a body of beliefs that we are expressing from. We manifest and create from states of consciousness, and we identify with ourselves from this state. There are an infinite number of states from which we can choose to experience, the thing is that most of the time, we are not consciously aware of which state we are occupying at the time; for the majority of us, we are occupying states on autopilot. It’s the combination of our beliefs, reactions, expectations, and thoughts that is cultivated into a state of being. The best way to describe a state is that it is like a world within itself that we are constantly creating from. When Neville Goddard talked about infinite states, he was referring to the different realities, the parallel realities that exist within the quantum field (you can think of the quantum field as the space where possibilities exist before they become physical reality).

You see the world through whichever state you are occupying, you attract the people in your life through this state, and you filter everything through the current state that you are in. This is why, if you are dwelling in a certain state, it can be so difficult to use force or willpower to create change. For example, if you are dwelling in a state of poverty, trying to get more money through changing your emotions or using force or willpower will hardly produce any results, because what usually happens is you’ll find yourself reverting back to that state. Neville Goddard emphasized that it is much easier to change your state first, by changing your beliefs, to get yourself into a new state of being. From this new state, you will attract different experiences that reflect your desire.

What we are doing every moment in our day to day lives is selecting states of being based on our beliefs, assumptions, and thoughts. So, if you are unhappy with your current state (i.e. your current circumstances, etc.) you focus on changing your state. Understanding states of consciousness is important when it comes to manifesting, because our dominant state of consciousness is what will always be out pictured in our 3D reality.

I personally didn’t understand this for a long time, so I would use techniques (for example, visualizing and affirmations) and then go about the rest of my day on autopilot, not realizing that I was occupying a state of lack the majority of the time. After long periods of doing this with little to no results, I got really frustrated. Using self-observation really helped me become aware of what state I was dwelling in throughout my day to day. So, if you are struggling with manifesting, I would recommend starting with just observing where you’re dwelling internally throughout your day to day. Are you living in state of the wish fulfilled when it comes to your desire? Or are you unknowingly occupying a state of lack (doubting if it will come, focusing on the 3D/external circumstances, questioning when or if it will come, etc.).
